Pineapple leather

Pineapple leather, also known as Piñatex®, offers a variety of unique properties that make it an attractive material. It is easy to process and can be easily processed with standard household sewing machines. Despite its lightness, it is robust and water-repellent, which underlines its durability and versatility.

The processing options for pineapple leather are impressively diverse. It can be cut, sewn, ironed, riveted, punched, glued (water-based), stapled, punched and embossed. This flexibility makes it ideal for a wide range of DIY projects and allows for creative design options.

Thanks to a fleece backing made from pineapple leaf fibers, pineapple leather is particularly user-friendly. It is less prone to breaking or fraying, which often eliminates the need for additional edge processing. Like animal leather, pineapple leather develops an individual patina over time that emphasizes its uniqueness and gives it a characteristic look.

Production and ecological properties of pineapple leather

Pineapple leather is produced in an extremely environmentally conscious and sustainable way. First, ripe pineapple fruits are harvested, carefully collecting the plant's waste leaves. These waste leaves are then subjected to processing to extract the valuable fibers, with the remaining biomass being used to fertilize and replant the pineapple, creating a closed loop.

The extracted fibers are thoroughly washed and dried in the sun before being cleaned and mixed with polylactic acid (PLA) from corn. This mixture of 80% pineapple leaf fibers and 20% PLA forms the basis for the nonwoven material called Piñafelt®. This innovative process creates a sustainable and resource-saving material that does not require any additional space, water or pesticides.

The Piñafelt® is then colored and coated with pigments to create the final Piñatex® material. This process allows a variety of colors and textures to be created while maintaining environmentally friendly manufacturing.

Overall, pineapple leather manufacturing offers an impressive solution for sustainable materials that are both environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing.

Pineapple leather and sustainability

Pineapple Leather actively helps support rural farming communities by forming direct partnerships with agricultural cooperatives. This cooperation creates an additional source of income for pineapple farmers, diversifying and stabilizing their livelihoods.

The material is made from the leaves of the pineapple plant, a byproduct of the fruit industry that is typically discarded or burned. Adding value to this previously untapped resource creates a new source of income for farming communities that often depend on seasonal harvests. Integrating this practice into agricultural processes helps strengthen economic resilience and social stability in rural areas.

In addition, using the remaining biomass as natural fertilizer or biofuel offers another environmentally friendly perspective. This closes the loop and reduces the environmental impact of pineapple production while creating additional benefits for farmers and their communities.

Overall, the partnership between Piñatex® and agricultural cooperatives demonstrates a model of sustainable development and social responsibility that offers both economic and environmental benefits.

Care instructions for pineapple leather

For care, we recommend using a mild cleaning agent. Please avoid solvents such as alcohol, acetone, paint thinner, bleach, oils and similar products. Spilled liquids such as beer, wine, juices, soft drinks, coffee, tea or chocolate should be cleaned as quickly as possible, especially if the liquid is heavily colored. Sauce stains should be treated immediately to prevent staining. Contact with suntan oils should be avoided; If this happens, clean the area immediately with liquid soap or shampoo.

If necessary, clean it with a soap solution and a white cotton cloth moistened with water. Light colors may require more frequent cleaning. Avoid vinegar, waxes, silicones, all-purpose cleaners, stove cleaners or similar cleaning products as they can cause permanent damage. Then dry the surface with a dry, white cotton cloth.

If accessories become discolored, remove the stain immediately with shampoo and a white cotton cloth, rinse the area with water and allow it to dry.
